Pacemaker implantation and replacement unit

Athens Doctors’ Hospital has a modern Pacemaker Centre for the Implantation and Replacement of Pacemakers. With state-of-the-art equipment, fully and constantly trained scientific personnel, it offers high-level services to thousands of our fellow citizens requiring pacemaker implantation, the check of its proper functioning, and its replacement when necessary. Pacemaker implantation is deemed necessary when a person has great bradycardia, above 50 beats per minute or long cardiac pauses, greater than 3 seconds, which do not occur during sleeping. A patient may also need pacemaker when a required treatment administered causes abnormal bradycardia.

After the pacemaker implantation, many persons think that they will have to reconsider it when it fails or when it is close to failing.

THIS IS ACTUALLY WRONG!

The pacemaker’s operation should be regularly checked for many reasons. · The pacemaker should be checked in the special Pacemaker Check Centres by specialised cardiologists once or twice per year. · The check is non-interventional and it is conducted without causing pain, using telemetry from a computer-programmer, which communicates with the pacemaker. Therefore, we can check both the proper functioning of the pacemaker and its electrodes, as well as: · We can change its settings, if required, for more appropriate functioning, and sometimes to save its battery and extend its life. · We discover the presence of other arrhythmias, since the pacemaker functions as a rate Holter, and we implement the appropriate treatment. · We ascertain the battery’s life duration, which promptly warns us for the safe replacement of the pacemaker, well before its complete failure.
